You gotta have confidence!

Officiating takes confidence. Based on our discussion in class, please explain what that statement means OR add to someone else's post on this topic.

10 Finer points

Here are the 10 finer points covered so far. 1. Pass away from the defender. 2. Always look under the basket first. 3. Catch with your eyes. 4. Move the ball in Zone Offense. 5. Have legs ready to shoot. 6. Triple threat. 7. Fake a pass to make a pass. 8. Shorten the pass. 9. Make the perfect backdoor pass. 10. Pass in if their number's visible. Which 2-3 of these do you need to work on the most? What do you need to do to become better at them?

"Men don't follow titles. They follow courage."

Have you seen or heard of the movie Braveheart? The main character, played by Mel Gibson, is William Wallace. Way back in the dark ages, Wallace led a rebellion of Scottish people against their corrupt and evil occupiers, the British. In one scene, he tells a man who had a claim to Scotland's Kingship that "Men don't follow titles. They follow courage." As we discussed in class today, there's a lot of truth here. What can we learn about basketball leadership from Wallace's statement?

Good work so far!

Thanks for your great comments on the last blog. So far, each of you is earning 100% in this course. Up till now, I've awarded full marks to everyone simply for doing your assignments of making blog comments. Starting today, I will begin to to evaluate the quality of your comments. Thoughtful, well written comments that add something NEW to a discussion will get high marks. Lower marks will be given for comments that lack thought, don't add something new, or are poorly written. Quality is better than quantity--in other words, make it good, not long! For tonight's assignment, read through the comments your classmates made last time on the qualities of basketball team leadership. Comment on one person's comment(not your own). You might share why you disagree with them. Or you might share an example that demonstrates what they wrote about. Or maybe you can add something to what they wrote to make it better. Be respectful and try to add to our understanding of "leadership." See y'all Thursday! (Mr H)

Hey there, basketball students. Thanks for your participation today and yesterday in the class. It was good to have Jennie join us after being away on Wednesday. Here are three things that I thought were really positive from this week: First, you all participated well. Second, players were looking for ways to work together. Third, there is an openness to learning about leadership. Today, we talked about what makes someone a leader on a b-ball team. Your answers were thoughtful. Now you've had a chance to think about it. So answer in a brief comment to my blog: what do you think makes someone a leader on a basketball team? See you on Monday! Mr Hohensee

Hey KCS students, Welcome to a new school year and a brand new course. Isn't this great? I get to teach/coach my favorite sport, and you get to earn high school credits playing B-ball! Basketball has rules that make the game work and fun for everyone. For the same reasons, my Basketball Leadership course will have some rules. The word STOP will help you remember my four rules: S - Submit to my leadership. Follow my directions with a positive attitude! T - Treat your classmates with respect. They're your teammates! O - On time to every class. Don't make your teammates wait! P - Prepared for every class. You'll need proper attire! In basketball, breaking a rule results in a change of possession or a free throw. If you break a rule, there's a consequence. And the more serious the violation, the greater the consequence. The same will occur in my class. Running lines, missing out on a fun activity, or losing marks are consequences violators could face. Before our next class (Thursday, September 6), please post to my blog an answer to this question: What is one thing you hope to get out of Basketball Leadership 11? Thanks, Mr H
