"Men don't follow titles. They follow courage."

Have you seen or heard of the movie Braveheart? The main character, played by Mel Gibson, is William Wallace. Way back in the dark ages, Wallace led a rebellion of Scottish people against their corrupt and evil occupiers, the British. In one scene, he tells a man who had a claim to Scotland's Kingship that "Men don't follow titles. They follow courage." As we discussed in class today, there's a lot of truth here. What can we learn about basketball leadership from Wallace's statement?

  1. We can learn that you don't necessarily have to be the team captain to lead. Even something simple like taking the initiative to start a drill, or be the one who works hardest and sets an example for the other team members is leading with courage and by example.

  2. The thing that we can learn from William Wallace's speech is that it does not matter how successful you are people will not follow you unless you show leadership and one big part of leadership is courage.
People like a leader to have courage.
ex; in the book Watership Down the Thearah is followed because he had the courage to lead the predator away from the rest of the bunnies so the people thought of him as a leader.

  3. Even though a leader may be very afraid at times, it takes courage to get over that fear and focus on the task at hand. Fear in basketball can come from the nervousness of a big game, a big player on the other team, or the thought of losing. A leader with courage will put a brave face on and inspire his team with their works and actions.

  4. Courage comes from the heart, and so does passion. These are qualities of a strong leader. A title means nothing on its own. Leadership in basketball must also draw from these qualities to inspire and bring passion to the players.

  5. I believe that this help in basketball because courage shows confidence in what you are doing, which makes it a lot easier to follow this person. On the basketball court having courage could be like not panicking when you get into high pressure situations, or maybe you check someone who is bigger than the people you usually check

  6. When you're losing, it can be tough and discouraging. But when someone on the team is courageous and doesn't give up, the whole team notices that. As the game goes on the team will follow who is encouraging, not the one who's the captain or even the top player.
