I have experience in reffing as I have done so in soccer for the last five years, and I completely agree that officiating takes confidence. One of the key parts of officiating is selling the call, as in making your signal/call with an attitude that lets everyone know you're in charge. If you make your calls strong and decisive, people are much less likely to argue with them.
In my experiances in Lacrosse I have noticed that when a ref is not in control of the game it goes bad quickly. But when the the ref is in control of the game and blows his wisle with confidence there is less likly to be anyone complaining. When a ref has confidence in his calls he is looked at as a better ref and people are less likly to argue against his call. When they are uncertian on who hit the ball out but blow the wisle hard and quickly show which team has posetion even if they are wrong no one argues.
When the ref messes up, it can throw the whole game. It's really important to know how to make the right call and be confident it was the right one. Even if the crowd boos you, it's not always the call they want but sometimes thats the call it should be. Don't back down, you're the boss.

If you do not have confidence as a ref i think that there will be more arguments and less respect from the players, but if you do have confidence it shows the crowd and the players that you know what your doing and theres nothing to argue about, but you also need to know the game and when to call the fouls or violations.
